Bryan Johnson Award

Minutes

News & Views from Your Elected Representatives

At our December board meeting we were provided with a synopsis of the 1997 accomplishments and contributions made by the cooperative as well as a list of the individual achievements of the I was so impressed with the information, I felt it should be shared with all the members.  To me it represented one more reason to be proud to serve on the board of such a community-spirited organization.

Our members benefited by:

  • 4.4 percent rate decrease in January 1997
  • Contract signed to purchase green power from BPA
  • New website, www.salemelectric.com
  • New automatic payment program
  • Installation of new service to 300 customers
  • Implemented a heat pump loan program

While it is important to always keep our members needs first and foremost, we cannot ignore the greater needs of our community and our desire to be a good neighbor and strong business partner.

During 1997 we provided the community:

  • Lighting for Marion Square Park
  • Donated used computer equipment to North Salem High School
  • Helped sponsor the Oregon Symphony Orchestra, Boys & Girls Club summer reading program, Keizer & West Salem   Little League, Victim Offender Reconciliation, Salem Rodeo, and Dr. Wilderness school program
  • Painted a beautification mural on the switching gear under Marion Street Bridge near the Saturday Market
  • Collected donations for United Way, Cerebral Palsy, and American Red Cross
  • Participated in Keizer Kids Safety Day

The award-winning employee Drill team participated in the Iris Festival Parade, Waterfront Parade, and Festival of Lights Holiday Parade staff.

Salem Electric board president Jim Dyer presented Representative Bryan Johnston with the Co-Operator of the Year Award from the Oregon Rural Electric Cooperative Association. This award is presented annually to a Legislator who demonstrates outstanding support of Oregon's electric cooperatives.  Johnston was instrumental in working with the electric cooperatives in Oregon during the 1997 Session of the Legislature to halt the rapid progress of electricity restructuring.
