My relationship with
Salem Electric started in the summer of 1988. As a new employee at Siltec
Silicon, I worked with the fine Salem Electric staff on many projects, and on
solutions to the few problems that we (Siltec/Mitsubishi Silicon America) have
experienced with Salem Electric over the years. Soon after that I started to
attend board meetings, getting to know the board members as well as the staff,
and developing an interest in serving on the board. I ran for a board position
in 1995, losing to one of my valued present colleagues on the board, Alicia
Bonesteele (a big mistake on my part, running against Alicia). Eventually, I
was appointed by the board to fill an open position in 1998! Then, most
recently, you elected me to my second three-year term this past May. At that
time I was elected by my peers to serve as the board president for the 2001/02
term.
It has been my
privilege and pleasure to get to know and work with the staff and other board
members, meeting and discussing important issues with many of our members, and
serving on this fine board. However, it is with sadness that I must inform you
that I now need to pursue career options that will take me away from Salem and
my duties on the board of Salem Electric. My last board meeting will be
Tuesday, September 25.
By the time you
read this article, the process for appointing my replacement will already be
well underway. But I thought I would briefly describe the process for you so
that you might better understand.
First, there
will have been a press release issued to the local papers, the Statesman Journal,
Keizertimes and West Side, notifying the public of the impending
board opening. Following that there will have been advertisements in the Statesman
Journal, Keizertimes and West Side soliciting applicants and
instructing prospective board members of the process that they must follow to
be considered for the open board position. At our September 25 board meeting,
we will have declared an open position on the Board. October 15 is the deadline
for submitting applications.
At the board
meeting on October 30 (please note this is one week later than normal) the
board will review applications and select finalists. Next, there will be a
special board meeting on November 13. At this meeting the finalists will make a
presentation to the board and answer any questions that the board members have.
Finally, after all of this consideration, the board will make the appointment
during this meeting. I would encourage all of you that are able to attend these
important meetings.
I pursued my
board responsibilities with the hope of being a positive force in guiding Salem
Electric through these difficult times of power deregulation. I can only
believe that, as demonstrated by my recent re-election and appointment to board
president, I have been somewhat successful. But, whatever success I may have
had must be shared with my wonderful colleagues on the board and our dedicated
staff.
Finally, as I take
leave from my position on your fine board, I wanted to give each of you, staff,
fellow board members and members, my best wishes for success in the future.
Murray McCreary
President
