Approves a Scholarship Program
One
of Salem Electric’s five main goals is Good Community Relations. One of the
ways we try to achieve that goal is by being involved in communities we serve.
Being a good community partner can be recognized in several different ways.
Salem Electric is a part of your community and
recognizes certain needs, one of which is the rising cost of a college
education and the burden it places on students and families.
In 2002, the board directed staff to develop a
scholarship program. At the April 2003 board meeting, ten $1,000 scholarships
were approved for Salem Electric members. The program will be administered by
the Oregon Student Assistance Commission (OSAC), which administers more than
250 privately-funded scholarship programs. Since the March 1, 2003 deadline for
OSAC-administered scholarships has passed for this year, OSAC will draw names
of Salem Electric members who have submitted their applications for other
scholarships. Those members drawn will receive the scholarships.
Next year Salem Electric’s scholarships will be included in OSAC’s scholarship
application catalog with the other scholarships they administer. The guidelines
for Salem Electric’s ten $1,000 scholarships are now being finalized but will
likely include at least the following:
-
Recipients will be selected by OSAC;
-
Any individual residing at a residence
served by Salem Electric is eligible to apply;
-
Available to college students for any
grade level;
-
Applies to any accredited university,
college, or community college;
-
Recipients are eligible for only one SE
scholarship in their college career.
Our
scholarship program will be actively promoted in our newsletter, at high
schools, and by OSAC prior to next year’s application process. Watch for more
details. The board is excited to be able to offer this opportunity to its
members. Call Terry Kelly at 503 362-3601 for more information.
