Employee
Profiles:
Cindy Lenker
Terry Kelly
In January, the Information Bulletin
profiled new manager Bob Speckman. Instead of filling his old position of
assistant manager, Bob decided to broaden an already active management team. To
the existing team of Bob, Jack Belleque and Roger Kuhlman, two other long-term
Salem Electric employees were added: Cindy Lenker and Terry Kelly. They were
also promoted, so we thought it would be useful to profile them here.
Cindy Lenker never thought of her filing and
reception job as a career. She started as a part-timer the week before
graduating from high school in 1979. She's been at Salem Electric ever since.
From receptionist, she has held jobs in customer service, billing and payroll.
For the past 10 years, Cindy has been the Administrative Secretary for the
Conservation Department. Her new position is Administrative Assistant,
supporting the General Manager and all three department heads.
"This certainly is turning into a career!"
Cindy said. "I'm a bit nervous because I'm going from a task-oriented job to
project coordination. I'm excited because the job will be flexible and
challenging. In addition to learning much more about the utility business, it
will give me a chance to get involved in some other community things Salem
Electric helps like Rotary and the West Salem Business Association."
When not working, Cindy and her husband are
raising children. Her two from a previous marriage, are 14 and 10. Her husband
Bud, a carpenter with a commercial contractor, also has two children from his
previous marriage. They are 11 and 10. Together, the family spends quite a lot
of time at the First Evangelical Church in North Salem. Bud sings in the choir
and Cindy teaches bible studies Wednesday nights.
Terry Kelly started with Salem Electric as a
contractor doing residential energy audits. It became full time in 1983 as the
co-op board put more efforts into conservation. Soon he was supervising the
Conservation Department, overseeing residential...which expanded to include
appliance rebates, a fluorescent bulb program, and new construction...as well
as commercial and industrial programs.
Promoted to manager of Member Services, Terry
will continue to be responsible for conservation programs in addition to the
Member Assistance Program. He is looking forward to working with other
employees on new programs and services Salem Electric may offer. Terry will
also take more responsibility for member communications, including the
Information Bulletin. And finally, Terry will continue to be active in the
community. He was president of West Salem Business Association for three years.
He said he wants to be more involved in other groups Salem Electric belongs to.
Terry has been married to Peggy Kelly for 11 years.
They have a daughter, Hannah, who is six. Their spare time is spent fixing up a
West Salem Dutch Colonial house built in the 1920s. "When we moved in, it
wasn't very habitable," Terry said. He and Peggy love yard work, home
improvements and weekend getaways. Terry says he hopes Hannah will be the
leader of her shop class, some years from now. Together, daughter and dad
putter in his wood shop, building things and working on projects.

Thermostats - Simple Solutions
Have you ever been in a room heated with zonal
heat (ceiling heat, baseboard, or wall heaters) that was uncomfortable...either
too hot or too cold? The heater usually gets the blame, but the problem could
be the thermostat.
Inexpensive thermostats are commonly installed
in homes with zonal electric heaters. This type of thermostat is slow to react
and allows room temperature to wander as much as 5 degrees on either side of
the set point before turning the heater on or off. Wasted energy and
uncomfortable rooms are the result.
An electronic thermostat can solve this
problem. It keeps the room temperature within 1.5 degrees of the thermostat
setting, offering maximized comfort and efficiency.
Electronic thermostats are available at many
home improvement stores at reasonable prices. Plus, Salem Electric now offers
rebates for these energy saving products.
If you would like information on this, or
other energy saving ideas, contact our Conservation Department at 362-3601.
Remember...we also have a residential weatherization program for customers with
electric heat.
