Payment Options

Let’s face it, nobody actually enjoys paying their electric bill. As painful as it may be, we have tried to make it as simple as we can. Included on this page are several payment options to make your life easier.

PAY BY MAIL
You receive your bill each month, write a check, apply a stamp to the return envelope provided and drop it in the mail.

PAY IN PERSON
Come to our office at 633 Seventh Street NW, Salem, and make your payment in person. This will give you the opportunity to ask questions, pick up literature or inquire about our programs and services.

SALEM ELECTRIC DROP BOX
Put your bill and check in an envelope (no stamp needed) and drop it in the drive-up drop box in our parking lot. Or you can use the slot to the left of our main building’s entrance. Remember, these payments are only collected at 8:00 a.m. Monday through Friday. So if you need to make a payment to avoid having your power disconnected, you should pay in person during regular office hours, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., except on holidays.

COMMUNITY DROP BOXES
If you’re out in the community and it’s convenient, drop your payment off at one of the following drop boxes:

  • Roth’s (West Salem)
    1130 Wallace Road NW

  • Roth’s (Keizer)
    5013 River Road N

  • Salemtowne
    (West Salem)
    2900 Oakcrest Drive NW

  • Salem Senior Center (Northeast)
    1055 Erixon Street NE

These are drop box sites only, no transactions can be made.  Please allow up to five working days for the payment to be delivered to Salem Electric. No cash payments please.

AVERAGE PAY
To help make budgeting easier, sign up for the Average Pay Program—only residential customers with current accounts are eligible.

Your monthly bill is averaged and you’re charged a similar payment each month, based on previous usage.

AUTOPAY
Consider our Autopay Plan.  With your authorization, we can deduct your payment from your checking account or charge it to your MasterCard or Visa...automatically. You still receive your monthly bill and have about two weeks to review it prior to the payment being deducted. You can even tell us when you want the monthly payments deducted.

CREDIT CARDS
Maybe it’s convenience, maybe it’s that you want to have more frequent flyer miles on your Visa — you can pay your bill with your Visa or MasterCard over the phone, in person, or by e-mail.

If you have questions or would like to sign up for any of these payment options, contact one of our Customer Service Representatives (address below) or write a note on the back of your bill and we’ll get back to you.

How To Stay In Control

In 1999 the Oregon Legislature approved deregulating a portion of the electric power industry. Beginning in 2001, certain customer classifications of investor-owned utilities will be able to select their power provider.  While this doesn’t effect consumer-owned utilities, like Salem Electric, we don’t know what future legislative sessions will bring.

Your board of directors has the following position:

“Salem Electric takes a position in opposition to mandatory retail wheeling for consumer-owned utilities, but will continue to monitor retail wheeling and be alert to advantages that may appear for the members.”

A unified voice for Oregonians can affect the outcome of any change in a way that maintains local control for your community-owned electric cooperative.  Just call us for a form and return it to the Oregon Rural Electric Cooperative Association, our statewide industry organization.

No Outage in March

It doesn't happen often, but it has happened twice in the last 14 months...no preventable power outages.  Since Salem Electric began business in1941, the only months that have had no preventable outages are June 1985, December 1988, November 1993, October 1996, January 1999 and now March 2000.
