Ready to build your future? Salem Electric is seeking an enthusiastic student interested in business administration, finance, operations, or technology to apply for a student director position and learn about board governance and the cooperative business model. Applications are accepted each spring for the following school year.

Student directors who successfully meet the program’s expectations will receive a scholarship ranging from $1,500 to $2,500 depending on their level of participation. Please note that the scholarship is not awarded if the student director resigns or is terminated from the program.

How to Apply

Criteria:

• Open to current high school or homeschooled sophomores or juniors
• Student must live in Salem Electric’s service area
• The application deadline is 5:00 p.m. May 4, 2026
• Students of Salem Electric board members and employees are not eligible

Expectations:

• Attend Salem Electric Board of Directors meetings from September through April, and the annual membership meeting on May 4, 2027.
• Provide a presentation about your board experience at the Salem Electric annual membership meeting on May 4, 2027.
• Submit a 200-225 word article about your experience for Salem Electric’s Co-op Newsletter (deadline May 4, 2027).

Application:

The application is available for download or can be picked up at our office at 633 7th Street NW, Salem, Oregon.

Students are asked to include one reference letter. Letters should be from an adult who is not a parent or legal guardian attesting to your character. Teachers, coaches, church members, employers, and volunteer groups are all acceptable references.
