The electric utility industry is going through a lot of changes. Some people rely on our “Info Bulletin” to find out what’s new at Salem Electric. We plan to continue that AND expand your options.
We offer a variety of speakers and topics relating to Salem Electric. If you have a community or civic group that’s interested in our message, contact our Member Services Department at 503 362-3601, and we’ll assist you in setting something up.
Salem Electric is an electric cooperative, owned by our members.
Our seven member Board of Directors is elected from, and by, our membership, each serving a three-year term.
In March 1938, Harry Read, the owner of a Salem area radio station, signed a contract with the Bonneville Power Administration to purchase power. Three years later our system was energized serving 17 residential and five commercial members.
In 1947, membership had grown to 655. Over the next few decades, membership expanded at a quick pace and Salem Electric now serves over 18,000 members.
