For decades, rivers like the Columbia and Snake have powered numerous hydroelectric dams, making the Pacific Northwest a clean energy leader. Fun fact: some hydroelectric dams can go from producing little or no power to generating electricity at full capacity in just minutes, helping keep the grid balanced when demand rises or solar and wind aren’t generating.
Hydropower remains a key part of our clean energy mix because it is renewable, dependable, and able to respond quickly when electricity demand changes. That flexibility is especially important since the water behind the dam acts like a huge battery, ready when you need it the most.
